Seminar Description: Applicable to all practice settings and specialty areas, this seminar teaches physical therapists advanced clinical methods for assessing pain as an effective method for determining movement impairment diagnoses and recognizing co-morbid medical conditions. The content knowledge and process skills necessary to enhance physical therapists’ labeling of differential classifications of movement impairments and functional limitations as essential to documentation that secures the best reimbursement will also be emphasized. Within the context of a collaborative practice paradigm, advanced patient pain examination, medical screening and evaluation competence will facilitate PTs clinical judgments regarding when to treat, and when to refer. Attendees will learn in depth methods of how to differentiate painful symptoms that result from pathology versus painful symptoms that result from underlying movement impairments that are the cause of the functional limitations physical therapists clinically encounter.
Learning Objectives
Identify the role and responsibility of “Differential Diagnosis” within physical therapy practice.
Identify three different diagnostic theories that provide effective strategies for effective clinical diagnostic decision making.
Analyze the diagnostic value and individual characteristics of clinical tests by defining Sensitivity, Specificity, and Likelihood Ratios.
Identify the value of subjective evaluation, i.e. “History”, as related to effective diagnosis and management of physical therapy patients.
Recognize which features of the History and Physical Examination influence not only intervention strategies but also decisions about diagnostic imaging, pharmacology, laboratory testing, and specialist referral.
Differentiate medical conditions that contraindicate physical therapy intervention from medical conditions that are appropriate for physical therapy interventions.
Discuss signs and symptoms that necessitate immediate medical referral.
Identify medical conditions that necessitate modification of physical therapy interventions.
Practically apply medical screening physical examination procedures in a competent manner.
