About Dr. DuVall
Sports Medicine of Atlanta is directed by Dr. Bob DuVall, a Board Certified Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapist, Manual Therapy Fellow, Certified Athletic Trainer and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Dr DuVall is also certified as a Primary Clinical Care Specialist, who is dedicated to the advancement of the profession of physical therapy, the education of terminal degreed doctoral physical therapy Interns, Residents and Fellows. Dr DuVall employs the utilization of evidence-based medicine in patient care, and is actively involved nationally in the promotion of the positive evolution of health care.
Full Biography
Dr. Bob DuVall is a Specialty Board Certified Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapist, a Manual Therapy Fellow Physical Therapist, a Certified Athletic Trainer, and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Treating patients from around the globe, he has been in private practice in Gwinnett County, GA for 25+ years. With a patient-centered leadership vision and mission, he has practiced as a primary contact physical therapy practitioner, clinically coordinating care for greater than 20,000 patients prior to physician intervention.
He is currently the President of Pro-Perform, The Arm Care Academy, Sports Medicine of Atlanta, Medical Wellness Associates as well as NxtGen Institute of Physical Therapy.
Dr DuVall has officially covered 3 different Summer Olympic Games and 5 World Championships where he has personally provided performance enhancing care to over 30 different Olympic Medalists and 4 World Champions. He was the first ever physical therapist to cover the Summer Olympic Games not credentialed as an Athletic Trainer, but credentialed as a Physical Therapist. As an athlete himself, DuVall has uniquely earned high school varsity letters in 5 different sports (football, wrestling, gymnastics, track and baseball) and 3 different collegiate sports (football, wrestling and track). He has won 6 Georgia State Trapshooting Championships and one National Trapshooting Championship. He has been inducted into the Carroll County (MD) Sports Hall of Fame and the Georgia Trapshooting Hall of Fame.
Dr DuVall is a long-standing community advocate in inter-scholastic and youth sports and recreation. He started sideline Sports Medicine and Athletic Trainer coverage in many of Gwinnett County Georgia’s high schools. He has devoted countless hours to the performance enhancing development of many of Gwinnett County’s most famous athletes who have gone on to enjoy record-setting collegian and professional sports careers. Keeping a pulse on preventative medicine, many of his professional services focus on minimizing the number of preventable injuries that occur in athletics. Thus, he has developed Pro-Perform and The Arm Care Academy to provide athletes with unique state-of-the-art alternatives for training which is based first upon the latest scientific diagnostic tests and measurements.
Scholastically, he has obtained Athletic Training Certification and Manual Therapy Certification as well as being the first physical therapist certified in Primary Care Physical Therapy by the University of St. Augustine. Bob obtained an Advanced Master of Medical Science degree from Emory University School of Medicine and has completed a post-professional doctorate in the area of Primary Care from the University of St. Augustine. His doctoral research included conducting a primary contact physical therapy practice analysis from which clinical competencies were identified to scientifically define the physical therapists’ essential roles in direct access practice. This research has been published in The Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy, June 2004. Dr DuVall has also authored three monographs for the APTA’s Orthopaedic Section’s Autonomous Practice and Medical Screening Physical Therapy Home Study Course. He has lectured and presented more than 100 national and international courses.
As an educator, Dr DuVall is a scholar and teacher as he directs the NxtGen Institute of Physical Therapy’s APTA Accredited Orthopaedic Residency and APTA Accredited Manual Therapy Fellowship Programs from within SportsMedicine of Atlanta. Interns, Residents and Fellows study under Dr DuVall’s mentorship in fields of exercise science, athletic training, and orthopaedic manual physical therapy. Likewise, Dr DuVall is an adjunct faculty Assistant Professor teaching “Differential Diagnosis and Advanced Medical Screening” and “Advanced Direct Access Competencies” at the Shenandoah, Alabama State and Florida A&M Universities.
Dr DuVall has also been honored with the APTA Private Practice Section’s 2007 Service Award and elected to serve 2008-2009 on APTA’s Private Practice Section’s Board of Directors. He directed the APTA’s Private Practice Section’s Educational Programming for 10 years. He has served as a content and process expert to the APTA’s Task Force on the development of Paid Clinical Internships. He also has served on the Nominating Committee of the APTA’s Orthopaedic Section.
Education
Dr. DuVall graduated from Western Maryland College in 1976 with a BA in Physical Education and obtained a certification in Physical Therapy from Emory University School of Medicine in 1978. He went on to earn a Master of Medical Science Degree in Applied Neurosciences. He earned his Doctor of Health Science from the University of St. Augustine in 2002.
